Questions (and Answers!)

Peter Manning NYC is an online apparel company based in the Flatiron District of Manhattan in New York City, which designs and develops clothing for the 'not-so-tall' guy. We offer fresh looks in more modest sizes, focusing on pants with shorter inseams, shirts with proper sleeve and body length, and jackets that don't wear like a tent!

Fit is everything, and too many guys have been walking around in over-sized, baggy clothes for too long. Wearing a proper-fitting garment is one of the best things a guy can do for himself. Proper-fitting clothes make you look great; and when you look great, you feel great. It is really that simple.

Let’s face it, going to the tailor is a pain. Sure, to sculpt a suit to perfection can be fun, but when you have to take your shirts, pants, jackets, sweaters, etc all to the tailor, in order to achieve a basic fit, it's a drag (not to mention expensive!). Also, a tailor can shorten hems but he can’t address all issues, such as proportion, and details like pocket and collar size, that make a big difference. Usually when we try to fix something at the tailor, it just ends up being out of proportion, as we have learned from bitter experience. In the end, many of us skip the tailor and live with clothes that don’t fit, and that’s even worse.
-
The Tailor Tax is a term we coined, which represents the amount us shorter guys have to pay to fix our clothes. We pay lots more than the other guys!

Proper-fitting clothes should fit as close to the body as is comfortable. Things should fit well but you should have freedom of movement. Arms of shirts and jacket should be slimmer and not too long, pants should have a medium rise and a slimmer leg. Details like button stance (the distance from the collar button to the next button) should be properly proportioned. Pockets should not be too big, lapels not too wide, and collars should be smaller. Everything should be in proper scale. And scale and proportion are what we think about all day long at PMNYC.

The average height in the US is 5'9", so we define "not-so-tall" or shorter guys as 5’10” and under. This represents about 30% of the male population. But there are also taller guys with shorter legs, who love our shorter inseams!
-
In order to truly address our customer, we had to move away from traditional sizing (S, M, L etc). Those sizes in the market don’t address the needs of our guys (and every brand is different), so we created a proprietary sizing system designed for our target market. We based our sizing (1, 2, 3, 4, 2X, 4X and 4XL) on height, weight and body type.
We have developed a size calculator and after answering a few simple questions we can figure out all of this for you. You can find size calculator on every product page.
If you find that the size calculator didn't work well for you, we recommend contracting our Fit Specialists at support@petermanningnyc.com with your measurements and what went wrong so we can personally assist!

Tailored clothing and outerwear should go to the dry cleaners. Often tailored clothing just needs a pressing, rather than a cleaning. Don’t over-clean tailored clothing.
For our more casual items, machine wash in cold water and hang to dry (or dry clean) for near zero shrinkage. Cold wash and a warm dryer for minimal shrinkage. Machine wash warm and tumble dry med/high in order to shrink to liking.
Cold water is always better for maintaining colors. Hot washes are bad for clothes and usually not necessary to properly clean clothes.
-
While most all of our products are pre-washed at least once for softness and to reduce shrinkage, it is hard to eliminate shrinkage altogether. We recommend washing them in cold water and either hanging to dry or drying on low heat, to avoid excessive shrinkage. So, machine wash in cold water and hang to dry (or dry clean) for near zero shrinkage. Cold wash and a warm dryer for minimal shrinkage. Machine wash warm and tumble dry med/high in order to shrink to liking.

We pride ourselves on offering an off-the-rack fit better than anyone else, but if we can't do so with quality, it's not going to matter. So we design our products locally and source them globally, seeking manufacturers who don't run sweatshops. We focus on working with partners who deliver quality work at reasonable rates.
