FAQ
Questions (and Answers!)
-
Peter Manning is an online apparel company based in the Flatiron District of Manhattan in New York City, which designs and develops clothing that fits properly. We offer fresh looks in more modest sizes, with a focus on pants with shorter inseams; shirts with proper sleeve and body length; and jackets that don't wear like a tent!
-
We have trouble finding shirts that don't hang to our knees and pants that don't bunch up at our ankles. Proper-fitting clothes make you look great; and when you look great, you feel great.
-
Although sculpting the perfect suit can be fun, going to the tailor is a pain, especially when you have to alter all of your shirts, pants, and jackets just to find a basic fit. Additionally, tailoring is expensive, and the results aren't always worth the price! Tailors can shorten hems, but they cannot change proportional details like pockets and collar sizes. Stop spending so much at the tailor and find the perfect fit at Peter Manning!
-
The Tailor Tax is the extra amount we have to pay to fix up our clothes after we've bought them. Think of it as a second, more punishing sales tax!
-
Proper-fitting clothes should fit as close to the body as is comfortable. Excess fabric in general isn't flattering on our bodies. Pants shouldn't stack at your ankles, shirts shouldn't hang to your knees and jackets shouldn't fit like tents! But details are important too, like proportionally-sized collars and pockets, as well the placement of things like chest pockets and buttons. These have to be taken into account when designing a proper fit for our guys. Also, proper-fitting clothes can take some getting used to, if you've been wearing ill-fitting, baggy stuff all your life.

In order to truly address our customer, we had to move away from traditional sizing (S, M, L etc). Those sizes in the market don’t address the needs of our guys (and every brand is different), so we created a proprietary sizing system designed for our target market. We based our sizing (1, 2, 3, 4, 2X, 3X, 4X and 4XL) on height, weight and body type.
We have developed a size calculator and after answering a few simple questions we can figure out all of this for you. You can find size calculator on every product page.
If you find that the size calculator didn't work well for you, we recommend contracting our Fit Specialists at support@petermanningnyc.com with your measurements and what went wrong so we can personally assist!

Tailored clothing and outerwear should go to the dry cleaners. Often tailored clothing just needs a pressing, rather than a cleaning. Don’t over-clean tailored clothing.
For our more casual items, machine wash in cold water and hang to dry (or dry clean) for near zero shrinkage. Cold wash and a warm dryer for minimal shrinkage. Machine wash warm and tumble dry med/high in order to shrink to liking.
Cold water is always better for maintaining colors. Hot washes are bad for clothes and usually not necessary to properly clean clothes.
-
While most all of our products are pre-washed at least once for softness and to reduce shrinkage, it is hard to eliminate shrinkage altogether. We recommend washing them in cold water and either hanging to dry or drying on low heat, to avoid excessive shrinkage.

We pride ourselves on offering an off-the-rack fit better than anyone else, but if we can't do so with quality, it's not going to matter. So we design our products locally and source them globally, seeking manufacturers who don't run sweatshops. We focus on working with partners who deliver quality work at reasonable rates.
