Ties for Shorter Men
For shorter men there is an extra challenge in making sure the back side of the tie doesn’t hang longer than the front. You could tuck it in your shirt or have your ties shortened, but fortunately, Peter Manning NYC makes ties that fit!
Our ties are 2- 4" shorter compared to standard ones, just enough difference to make tying a tie much easier. Once you’ve tried a few times you’ll be able to eyeball your starting points. Use the buttons on your shirt as reference points for where the back of the tie should start. The tip of your tie should hit right below your belt line when you are finished.
We’re really pleased with the way our new silk/cotton blend ties turned out. They are a tad more casual than our all-silk ties, and come in an array of great colors. One must-have tie for our staff is the solid navy version. It’s always stylish and easy to match with a range of outfits.
OK, so which knot?
In most situations, the simple four-in-hand knot works well. For not-so-tall guys, this slimmer knot helps create a more flattering look (a small but important detail). That’s why all the clothes at Peter Manning are properly scaled; it all adds up a better overall appearance.
Instructions on tying the four-in-hand knot:
- Lay the wide end on your right and narrow end on your left.
- Cross the right over the left.
- Bring the wide end under and back to the right.
- Take the wide end and wrap it around the center to create a loop.
- Pull the wide end up and through the loop.
- Bring it down through the front loop.
- Slowly tighten the knot and pinch the top of the front (wide) end to form a dimple.
The dimple
A good tie dimple is the finishing touch. Just pinch the tie with your thumb and middle finger with intention to maintain the integrity of the depth of your dimple as you tighten up the knot.
A note on width
We make our ties 2 3/4 inches at the widest point. Narrow, but not too narrow, is what we recommend. This is a good width that remains classic but isn't too wide for not-so-tall guys. Here we see 5'5" George Stephanopoulos looking sharp as usual, but we think he'd look even better in a slightly slimmer tie.
Final thoughts
Even though the “air tie" (suit or sport jacket without-a-tie) look has gained popularity, a well-tied tie will always be welcome. Be the person in the room who’s stepping it up a notch. Wearing a tie is a sign of class and respect.
