5 Ways to Wear a Polo Shirt

5 Ways to Wear a Polo Shirt

Want to know how to wear a polo? You're in the right place. In this guide, we'll cover five easy polo shirt outfit ideas any guy can pull off.

How to wear a polo shirt

The polo shirt is a versatile wardrobe staple that every man needs in his closet.
If the t-shirt had a slightly more mature older brother, it would be the polo. But, even though polos are less casual than tees, they're just as comfy. A win-win for us guys!

If you're not sure how your polo shirt should fit, read this guide first (or watch the video below for examples):

They're also easy to wear and super versatile. Here are five simple polo shirt outfit ideas, starting with the most casual.

#1: Shorts and Sneakers

Shorts and polos go together like Mick Jagger and Keith Richards: they were meant to be, and they'll probably always be cool.

We recommend wearing chino shorts that hit above the knee. You can never go wrong with khaki (or tan) chino shorts, but feel free to mix it up with colors like blue or yellow.

Also, don't be afraid to dress up this casual look with a pair of brown loafers in leather or suede.

#2: With Chinos

Chinos are nice alternatives to jeans, especially since they can be dressed up or down easily, and they look great with polo shirts.

If you don't want to cuff your pants, just buy chinos that are the proper length. But if you do like to cuff, we get it - it's a cool, laid back look that that lets your ankles breath during spring and summer.

We're big advocates of cuffing because you want to, not because you have to.

With chinos and a polo shirt, you could wear sneakers, boat shoes, driving mocs, loafers...the choice is yours. If you do show some ankle, be sure to go sockless or wear low profile socks that disappear under your shoes.

#3: Jeans and Loafers

Want to dress things up a bit? Throw on some fitted jeans and a pair of brown leather loafers. By the way, this look works well with chinos too!

Polo with jeans and loafers

Medium or light wash jeans look great with medium or light brown loafers, while darker jeans will look best with darker brown, burgundy or black loafers.

Either way, make sure your jeans aren't so long that they're stacking up on top of your shoes. A little bit of "pants break" is okay, but too much can look sloppy.

#4: Tucked In

Want to dress things up a bit more? Just tuck your polo in and throw on your favorite sport coat or blazer. Keep the loafers or go with a pair of leather lace ups.

When in doubt, you can't go wrong with a navy blue jacket. Soft shoulders and patch pockets will give any jacket a more casual feel - perfect for wearing over a polo shirt.

#5: With a Suit

This is as formal as it gets. To dress down a suit, you can swap your dress shirt and tie for a polo - tucked in, of course.

Granted, this look isn't for everyone. It can feel a little tough to pull off. The key is to make sure your polo fits really well. If it's too big and long, it'll ruin the whole look.

If you wear suits all the time, especially in warmer climates, give the polo shirt a shot!

BONUS: Long Sleeves

If you love wearing polo shirts, you might want to check out the long sleeve polo. These are especially great for fall and winter - seasons that aren't usually associated with polos.
