What I'm Wearing This Fall ( And How to Use a Quarter Zip Sweater to Layer Up)

Hello, my friend. Brock here, from The Modest Man. I hope you're as excited for the fall and winter seasons as I am!

Fall means layers, and men look great in layers. I recently traveled back to my hometown of Washington, DC for week, and I got to wear layers the whole time (it was much cooler than Arizona, where I currently reside).

One of my favorite outfits from the trip featured the Tribeca Field Jacket in navy and the Madison Quarter Zip.

It's actually a pretty basic outfit:

  • Button up shirt
  • Sweater
  • Light jacket
  • Chinos
  • Boots

Throw in a couple of tasteful accessories (my watch and glasses) and you've got yourself a classic fall getup.

In case you're wondering, the glasses are from Warby Parker (one of my go-to brands for eyewear), and the watch is a Seiko (specifically, the SKX013).

With a 38 mm case diameter, it's small for a dive watch, which is why it's one of my favorite watches for small wrists (mine are roughly 6.5" around).

Now, I've been wearing the Tribeca Field Jacket in olive for a couple of years, and it's one of my favorite pieces of outerwear.

But I'm loving the navy blue version. It's super versatile and looks great with olive chinos.

I'm also thrilled that Peter Manning now carries a quarter zip sweater. After all, it's not easy to find one that's the right length for shorter guys.

You could choose almost any type of boot for this outfit. I'm partial to a dressy work boot, like these ones from Thursday Boot Co.

The cordovan/brown color is super versatile, and high quality work boots just get better with time. You really don't have to worry about scuffing them up, as they should be able to take a beating.

Layering Tips

  1. You should always be ready to shed a layer (or two ) if it warms up, so make sure each layer looks good on it's own.
  2. Wear patterns on the inside (closer to your body) and solids on the outside (farther from your body).
  3. Keep thinner, lighter fabrics as inner layers and heavier, rougher fabrics as outer layers.

Your Turn

Are you ready to layer up this fall? Do you have the key layering pieces, like a light jacket and quarter zip sweater?

If not, get on that soon because fall is here!
